Feeling the beige walls and antiseptic smell closing in on her, Monica pulled the drink back.

I don’t know why, we’re not a couple.”

“You’ve been here every day for the last five days. So, yes, we are a couple. You said you would marry me.”

Roger pressed the button, and the hospital bed whined as it rose until he was even with Monica’s gaze.

“We were six years old.” Her eyes rolled skyward.

Bandaged and reaching for her hand tentatively, Roger said, “Doesn’t matter, you promised.”

Monica peeked at him under her eyelids. “You’re broke.”

“You’re broken,” Roger said in a matter-of-fact manner.

Outraged, Monica jumped up.

Roger frowned at her antics. “Sit down, girl. We will always be honest with each other. I remember a little girl who was innocent and pure. She stood up for me when nobody else cared to. We’ve both made so many bad choices. We’ve hurt people because we were hurting. Sweetheart, we deserve each other.”

Monica sank down. She picked up the cup and held it to his lips. “We’ll see.”

Roger smiled, and his eyes lit up his entire face. “Yes, my queen, we will.”
